Second Grade Leader of the Week
Mrs. Georger's Schedule of Leaders
Return to Second Grade Home Page
During the year we will have one second grader at a time take the role of
Leader of the Week. There are some responsibilities that come with this
title and we are asking you to help your daughter as she prepares for her
position. Many classes have a Star of the Week program and we decided to
expand upon this idea.
Attached you will find the dates for the girls. There will not be one
special moment during this time so you do not need to mark your calendars in
order to be at school. Parents should not be part of the activities in
school but instead your time and attention is needed at home in preparation for
the week
.
There
are four responsibilities:
1.
Prepare material for a bulletin board
The
Leader of the Week class bulletin board is all about the student. She may
use a variety of things such as photos, artwork, artifacts, writings, and
projects. It can include information about travel, family and friends.
Staples
and thumbtacks will be used for the display. Make labels at home to go
with the material if desired. The student will arrange the bulletin board
with help from the teacher. Each homeroom has a designated bulletin board
for the Leader of the Week.
2.
Teach us about another leader, someone we can admire.
This
requires the reading of a biography or gathering biographical
information and giving a presentation to the class. The girls present the
information they would like the class to know. This can include pictures
or a poster. Guide your daughters to make their own decisions.
3.
Bring items for the Estimation Jar
The
Leader of the Week brings items to school to put in our estimation jar (a large
plastic pretzel jar). The quantity should be between 14 and 100. It
is best if no one knows how much is coming to school. The Leader of the
Week decides what should happen to the items. (shared given away, taken home,
or thrown away)
The
Fourth Responsibility is taken from this list
1. The leader chooses a book that she will read aloud to
the class.
This
requires practice at home so it is enjoyable to all.
or
2. Decide and announce the theme for one morning Sharing
Circle. (the Second Grade Show and Tell time)
or
3. Plan a simple activity for the class. The leader needs to
give directions and help classmates complete the activity.
The Leader of the Week and her teacher will schedule her
responsibilities. Each letter day offers different times when a
responsibility can be carried out. It is very helpful for the Leader to
come to school on A day of her week with all her materials. This
way she can be ready to do her tasks at any time. We will plan with her
in school so there are no surprises. The little ones donŐt panic like we
adults do!
Leader of the Week activities are just for the homeroom class. Each
bulletin board remains up until a new Leader begins her week.
We look forward to another year of wonderful second grade leaders.
